What is THERMSAVER and how does it work? THERMSAVER is a microprocessor-based energy saving device for hot water heating, and potable hot water systems. It monitors the flow and return water temperature and when it detects an increase in boiler demand it will allow the boiler to fire. Otherwise it will prevent the boiler from firing. It reduces boiler cycles and run times. All boilers are oversized. Boilers are initially designed so they may provide the necessary heat required on the coldest days of the year. Which is about 5% of the time. During these periods of high demand the boiler may continuously run. At other times the burner turns on and off to maintain the set temperature. It is during these periods of low demand that THERMSAVER saves energy. About 95% of the time. Hot water and steam lose energy much faster at a higher temperature than at a lower temperature. THERMSAVER extends the off cycle of the boiler. A factor that is determined by its computer. By extending the off cycle the temperature of the hot water will drop a few degrees and that will not effect the overall temperature of the building. If there is a drop in temperature (increased load) THERMSAVER will immediately cancel any extended off cycle and will allow the boiler to ignite. Boilers are most effective after they have reached their highest temperature. THERMSAVER utilizes this fact. The two or three degree difference in water temperature can be made up easily by running the boiler a little longer. The length of a boilers off cycle is the best measure of the heating demand or load. The load is directly related to the time it takes for the water in the boiler to drop from its high limit temperature to its low limit or “call” setting. When demand is high the off cycles are short and the on cycles are longer. THERMSAVER monitors the off cycles and adjusts their duration. THERMSAVER decreases fuel usage by extending the off cycles and creating longer, more efficient, and less frequent on cycles. The result of this process is a reduction in the number of ignitions and run time.
DOES THERMSAVER AFFECT MY BOILER? No. THERMSAVER does not change or improve the burning efficiency off your boiler. It calculates the optimum time between off and on cycles and controls burner ignitions accordingly, extending the off cycles. With less burner ignitions a boiler has longer life and will require less maintenance. Less system shock from the heating cooling process.
What if I already have an energy saving system installed? THERMSAVER is fully compatible with existing setback or any other energy saving control system. You will still enjoy the 10 to 20% savings regardless of your present energy saving device.
THERMSAVER has no mechanical parts and is virtually maintenance free.
